Lummi Indian woman photographed by Edward S. Curtis in 1915. The Lummi people lived and traveled along the waters of northwest Washington and the San Juan Islands for thousands of years. They migrated seasonally to their different longhouses in search of food. Common food sources included elk, salmon, deer, crab, sun-dried berries, and camas bulbs. As members of the Coast Salish family the Lummi people spoke, and still speak, the traditional Salishan language.
