A typical logging scene in early Whatcom County. A giant timber is being dragged through the woods to a waiting wagon or rail car. Originally, oxen were used to drag the felled logs out of the woods. Later, this job was performed by teams of horses. Eventually mechanical steam "donkeys," or yarders, took over, reeling logs in to a landing area using a system of cables.
