Bellingham Public Library, ca.1910. The city acquired a hilly lot at the corner of Commercial and Champion Streets for the new library. In 1906 Andrew Carnegie donated $20,000 towards its construction. The Bellingham Public Library was completed in February 1908 but its location required patrons to climb a flight of 57 steps each time they accessed the building. This inconvenience continued for 43 years until the next library was built. Two years after the new library was built this structure was torn down and the rocky outcrop it sat upon was leveled.
