St Joseph's Hospital, Bellingham, WA, ca.1903. The hospital was founded by two Sisters from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace who traveled from New Jersey to Fairhaven, WA in 1891. Their mission was to start a hospital for the local logging and sawmill community. The first hospital consisted of a 30-bed, two story frame building where patients ate vegetables raised by the Sisters and food donated locally. In 1901 the hospital moved to this larger, 53-bed facility. The structure was built at a cost of $21,000 with much community support.
