Harris Avenue ran past the Fairhaven Hotel, at right, in this photo ca.1903. Daniel J. Harris "Dirty Dan" platted the original townsite of Fairhaven January 2, 1883 calling it "Fair Haven on Harris Bay." Shortly after 1888 developers drew up grand plans for Fairhaven and growth in the district surged. When the depression of 1893 hit, local businesses and the town of Fairhaven went into a slump. Even though the towns of Fairhaven and Whatcom voted to consolidate as Bellingham in 1903, this area is still referred to as Fairhaven.
