The Federal Building, Bellingham, WA. Built between 1911 and 1913 as a Post Office and Courthouse, this structure is an excellent surviving example of Renaissance Revival architecture. Located in Bellingham's downtown commercial center, the building is typical of 20th century government institutions. Hugh Eldridge, Bellingham Postmaster, greatly influenced the design of the building as he felt the elderly and handicapped needed ground level access. As a result, when it was constructed it was the only federal building having an entrance on the same level as the sidewalk. The building still functions as a post office and houses other service spaces. In 1979 this building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
