Elk Street ca. 1885 as viewed from Ivy Street. Later called State Street, Elk Street was originally a dirt road running through the town of Sehome. The trees in this view have been cut back about as far as Maple Street. Wharf Street is shown running toward the bay to the left. The original Morse Hardware store was located on the left side of Elk street in the next-to-last building. There were few businesses in town at that time. In addition to the hardware store there was an eating establishment, a livery stable, drug store, and a dry goods store, Sidewalks were non-existent, and streets were mud when it rained–which was often.
